Once we are searching for a new destination we come across about the giant solider at Corbet’s Gap. The name of that giant is Dumbanagala (Dumen bara kanda). I have seen this giant several times in my knuckles hike. But I decided to climb this soon after our Aliyawetunuela hike which we had in September 2018. Further I was lucky to see the full range of Dumbanagala at the top of Alugal Kanda which we climbed on early September 2018.

However I was collected some informations and specially talked to Dumbanagala chalet and they informed me that there is no any proper foot path as well as from Dehigolla. But when I contact guide Raja, he said that there is a small foot path from Dehigolla but villagers are not frequently use that path. Then I decided to use our GPS Mapping knowledge to identify the easiest path to the top of Dumbanagala.

Journey started toward Thangappuwa Corbet Gap road

Then as per my usual findings I found the easiest path to Dumbanagala from Corbet’s Gap because I wanted to enter to that big plain which I saw clearly at Alugal Kanda. Hence I mapped the foot path on Google offline map and that is about few difference of altitude between the peak and Corbet’s Gap. However since there are no any people around the junction we thought to having a walk from Thangappuwa after we park our vehicles over there.

That was a lovely day because there was a bit shower on previous days and the path to Corbet gap from Thangappuwa was scenic. We reached to Corbet gap with in few hours and we didn’t see our destination due to the heavy mist around 9am. However as per the GPS we walked about 100m to Loolwatte side and got entered to the jungle from our left hand side. Initial jungle path is about 10 minutes hike and then we came to the plain. This plain was not only filled with grassy lands because most of places are like rocky plains. Hence we had to walk safely due to the slippery rocky plain.

However again we entered to the jungle and followed the GPS path adjoin to the ridge of the Dumbanagala from Loolwatte side. We met with a snake (Kunakatuwa) and it was sleep well on our way and we moved to the other side safely. This path is easier as we have to go parallel to the ridge of the mountain and then we will move to the higher altitudes rather than being lost in a fresh jungle. We create our own path and within 2 hours we were able to come to the peak.

We spent many times on our way to the peak since the surrounding environment was amazing and we wanted to capture everything smoothly. We were able to see Kobonila, Sphnix I and II, Aliyawetunuela, Alugal Kanda, Dothulugala, Deanston MWE, Hetakatuwegala, Balagiriya, Nawangala, Knuckles range, Lakegala, Wamarapugala, Gerandigala, Ellagal fall and some other falls near Alugal Kanda side.

Finally we came to the top of the mountain and our Altimeter app showed the height of the mountain as 1643m. Dumbanagala is the 7th highest mountain in Knuckles reserve. There were not much space at the top of the mountain but there was a clear place to stay for 20-30 people and a place to camp. Camping at the top of Dumbanagala is not easy due to the rocks and slopes. Peak was fully covered by Pigmi forest as we noticed this habit at the most of peaks which are height over 1500m.

We spent about 1 hour at the top and identified some more mountains and waited to see some peaks due to the mist. Since there was a rain previous day’s most of peaks are still covered by mist. We saw Loolwatte, Dehigolla, Kumbukgolla, Karambaketiya, Meemure, Kalugala, Ududumbara side as well as Mahiyanganaya side too.

After that we got down through the same route and it just got about 1 hour since we didn’t stopped at anywhere.

  • Quick hike to Waduwa Ketu Gala

When I was travelling to Dambulla for Yakkuragala hike I was suddenly saw this small rock and quickly turned to the sub road and parked the bike at the nearest house. And I got some informations about the nature of the place and any foot path and started my solo hike to the rock. This was having many historical backgrounds related to Danbadeniya kingdom.

I think this is the shortest hike in my life as I finished entire hike within 20 minutes. I just quickly ran through the foot path and came to the starting point of the staircase. That was not an easy climb due to the steepness and the windy environment. However I came to the top and had some photographs and observed more mountains so far.

After that I got down from the rock and came to the bike. I think it is not easy to get down from there rather than climb it. However climbing on rainy days will be a big trouble and this climb is not suitable for the people who are not much confident for climbing like this.

After that while I continue my travel to Dambulla I saw two peaks situated in left hand side. I turned to a small carpet road which goes parallel to the cancel and ride up to a small junction where there were few people and I asked informations about those mountains. A Mountain situated on the paddy is called Moragasgoda Kanda and the other one have like two peaks and it’s Kotagala kanda. Since I don’t have much time to conquer these peaks I searched for some more details such as looking for the risks and ability of conquering them. Fortunately I found a person who told me some information about the hike and I have visited Moragasgoda kanda since it was bit easy and close to the road. However I was added Kotagala kanda my list and hope we will find a day to climb these small mountains in 2019.

  • Beauty of Thangappuwa to Corbet’s Gap Road

As per my view Thangappuwa is the most beautiful village rather than Meemure. Because this innocent village still under traditional and village life style. There are several houses and about 3 retail shops and a school too. This environment is still fresh and clear. There were 2 streams flows through the village.

Their main job is tea, farming and guiding tourists. People are very generous and kind hearted. The closest mountain to this village is Kobonilagala. Apart from it village is close to Aliyawetunuela and Thangappuwa Kanda both are above 1600m.

We visited Thangappuwa for several times and last year we went there for three times. For Kobonilagala, Aliyawetunuela and Dumbanagala hikes. Perdel fall is a small fall situated near to the village and it can see on the way to Liyanagahapala to Thangappuwa foot path.

It’s about 6km from Thangappuwa to Corbet’s Gap via a road which is currently like abundant. Only 4X4, Safari jeeps, Motor Bicycles, Three Wheels, Lorries and Cycles can go from this road. If someone coming to Meemure from Kandy, this is the closest path to Meemure via Thangappuwa. Due to the road difficulty no one use this path except for cycling. On rainy days or soon after a rainy season whole the road will looks like a stream.
As we experiences on January the road was bit dried. But in November when we walk Thngappuwa to Corbet Gap the entire road was totally wet. There were plenty of streams and mini falls along the road. It’s a beautiful experience to have in Knuckels reserve.

This road is the source to Aliyawetunuela, Kobonilagala and Sphnix I hikes. Further a hotel will be opened soon near to Corbet Gap.

Blue summit point

In 2014 when I hiked Gombaniya I did note this magnificent giant called Yakkunge hela and ever since that day I wanted to conquer it so It was pushed up the list on 2019 and It didnt fail my expectations.

We reached Hulu ganga at around 7.30a.m. and headed towards Alakolle waththa where we halted our vehicle. It was a long walk towards Rathnathenna and just before Rathnathenna we decided to climb the mountain along its Southern ridge. Our choice was a good one because we found a clear cut path after few hundred feet of trekking. There were some intermittent bamboo and Nelu which we exited at one point to enjoy a clear view of knuckles forest range. After the exit point it was a continues gradual ascend along the ridge through Pygmy forest with breath taking views.

  • Through Tuff Path to Kohonawala Village for Donate School Items

From last few years we donate school items to rural school. This year also we arranged to  donate school items &  selected 2 most rural schools in Madolsima area. First one is Kohonawala School & other one is Galwelagama School. We planed first visit to Kohonawala school on November 30th. We started our journey on 11.00 p.m on 29th November. Our aim was reach to Madolsima before 6.00 a.m. But we faced big problem when our van broke down at Bandarawela. Hiring a another van is a only option. At last we found a van & transferred all cargo to it. Two of our crew waited at Bandarawela town to repair the van. We started our journey again & reached to Madolsima around 8.30 a.m. Friend of ours contacted OIC of Madolsima Police Station & informed about our journey. He agreed to arrange facility to us having breakfast & wash there. First we went to Madolsima Police Station & had bread with curries as quick breakfast  , which we took from home. After having that we rushed to Kohonawala because we knew that we were late & we have to pass very tough route. Our aim was reached to school quick possible time , because we knew that little ones waiting for us. Again we faced a problem , the estate road under construction & vehicles can’t go to the turning point to the school at main road. Therefore we have to start our journey before 1.5 k.m’s from turning point to school. We took the all stuff & start our journey around 9.15 a.m. From morning there was little rain & heavy mist. When we passed little distance whole area covered by mist & faced big difficult to tackle the route. With raining water streams started from every where. We were unable to wait for rest because we faced heavy attacks from leaches. If we wait attacks will get double. Every ones had 2 – 3 bags on their shoulders & have some gift items in their hands. Path was very slippery & dangerous condition on raining time. But how ever we mange to overcome all the difficulties & reach to the target. Finally we came to the school around 1.15 p.m after very tuff & tired journey. Till that time little ones waiting for us. We quickly changed our cloths there & start to distribute school items to students. Principle & one teacher in this school.  We gave school bag, writing books for whole year, water bottle, lunch box, pencils & other stationery items for each student. Also donate sports items & stationery items for school. Also we gave same items sets to other students in the village ( Grade 5 – 10 ). Also we gave past papers & answer book sets to O/L students. After distributing all items to students finally we gave pack of sweets to each student. They highly happy for it. Gift items for other students in the village we handover to the principle & he agreed to distribute it on later. We had memorable good time with them & kids were in very happy about their gifts. The principle arranged his teacher’s home for our accommodation. After finishing every thing we went to teacher’s house with him. Again we have to go another 2 km’s walk through water ways & bushes. We reached there around 3.30 p.m. As soon as we reached there we went to nearby water way & had a good time there. That surely big cure for our tiredness. After having dinner we went to sleep early with thinking of next day morning tuff & difficult climbing.  We completed a day with lots of unforgettable happy memories.

1. It needs permission to climb the rock as it is situated in Maduru Oya NP.
2. Start the journey early.
3. Better wear long attire.
4. Carry at least 1l per person as it is a dry zone hike.
5. You can come across wild elephants.
6. Road condition is excellent except few sections along Aralaganwila road.
7. It is just a small hike and we spent only one and half hours to reach the top.
8. There are no foot pathways. Get assistance of Google map.Dhanigala
1. No need permission for a day hike from Wild life department as it is situated out of Maduru Oya NP. But if you are camping it may need permission as it is an archeology reserve and several attempts for treasurer hunting were revealed.
2. Carry at least 1l per person.
3. Need a guide as there is one place to get on the circular rock. If you miss this place you will go around the range.
4. Better inform the chief priest of Kandegama Temple.
5. This is also a half a day hike.
6. Both hikes can do in a single day if well planned.

  • Kamburagala-කඹුරාගල / Topa Gala =400m and Kandegama-කන්දේගම කන්ද (Danigala) =280m

Kamburagala is a funny shape mountain situated at Maduru Oya (මාදුරු ඔය) NP in Ampara District. (Maduru Oya NP spreads into both Polonnaruwa and Ampara districts). Metric map marked it as Kamburagala and it’s highest point has rocks seems like an erected penis. Therefore some locals (mainly military boys) named it as “Topa Gala” (ටොපාගල) which is the lay term for the fore part of Penis.

Kamburagala (400m). How it is seen to Aralaganwila-Maha Oya road.

Highest point of Kamburagala is seen as an erected penis. Therefore it is called as “Topa Gala”

Closer appearance of “Topa”

It would be nicely appearing when you travel along Manampitiya-Aralaganwila-Maha Oya road (B507) through Maduru Oya NP (This is the shortest way to reach Maha Oya from Polonnaruwa). My first experience of this rock was when I was at Omanugala. Later I had repeated visits at this area to climb famous Dhanigala (ධානිගල) and it was another chance to observe this rocky mountain.

I had some plans to hike this mountain before I left Polonnaruwa in latter part of 2017, but it didn’t work. After several cancellation I was able to put a date with some of my old colleagues at Polonnaruwa.
It was about one and half years after leaving this beautiful area. After map reading I realized this hike as an easy one. Kamburagala is situated on right side of the main road. It’s base is situated about 1km from the main road and we had to walk along an open area with shrubs to reach the base of this rock. It was quite late start around 11am due to unavoidable reasons. After passing the plain with shrubs we have entered typical dry zone forest with boulders.

Next part of the hike happened through dry forest. It was a great relief to escape from afternoon heat. It was a continuous easy ascend till you reach the peak. We had few breaks during the journey. Google map was our guide to find the highest point of the rock. By 12.30noon we have reached the highest point of Kamburagala where this awkward rocks situated.

Closed observation of this awkward rock (Penis / Topa) revealed it consists of three rocks in 90 degree angle. But it is not possible to get on to this rock. Summit of Kamburagala provides 360 degree view towards surroundings. We were able to watch Omanugala, Narakamulla area, Thoppigala, NDK Lake (Nagolle De Kodiunne), Dimbulagala, Dhanigala range, Maduru Oya reservoir, Kuda Sigiriya-Dehiaththakandiya, Unukirigala (the rock situated behind Rathkinda-Ulhitiya reservoir) Kokagala and Padiyathalawa area, Henanigala, Ampara and Maha Oya area etc. I was not able to identify second line mountains as there was some haziness around. There was a small cave (enough for three or four people) just at the base of this rock.

It is an achievement of another dream

When we were on top of Kamburagala

We spent about an hour on top of Kamburagala and say good bye to this funny shaped rock. It took only about forty five minutes to reach the road from top of Kamburagala. It was another achievement of long awaited dream.

Famous Dhanigala rock is situated next to Kamburagala. I have been there thrice (two unsuccessful attempts and one successful attempt). This is the high time to come in a description of Dhanigala.

Kandegama rock / Dhanigala (=280m)
Kandegama rock / Danigala rock is situated in Aralaganwila-Kandegama area. It is an archeology reserve situated at border of Maduru Oya NP. Two rocks supporting Maduru Oya dam are Danigala / Kandegama and Kamburagala. While Kamburagala is situated in Ampara district, Danigala / Kandegama is situated in Polonnaruwa district. Maduru Oya is the boundary of two districts.
Danigala / Kandegama became popular in 2017 due to Derana Travel with Chathura programme. They have highlighted the circular rock situated at one end of Danigala range and mentioned it as an alien mountain. Thereafter it has become a popular hiking destination.
Dhananjay RMW (ධනoජය රජමහා විහාරය) is situated at base of Danigala / Kandegama rock.

Geography of the area. Large circle indicates Kandegama / Danigala rock. It’s popular circular part is shown by the arrow. You can notice Maduru Oya dam is extending from this rock. In metric map they have marked the rock at the other end of the dam as Dangala. Click image to enlarge.

Danigala / Kandegama rock is seen to Maha Oya road. It’s circular part is seen in right end.

Circular part of Danigala rock in Google map.

In closed observation of this rock would reveal it as a range. Approach to the area with circular part from two directions: One can start from Dhananjay RMW (Kandegama cave temple) side and other one is from Kandegama archeology site. Kandegama archeology site is the newly preserving site by archeology department. We have started from Kandegama archeology site. Soon we entered the forest and followed a fainted foot path towards the rock. If someone starts from RMW side, will come across the cave with reclined Buddha statue. We also had a chance to visit there with guidance of our guide.
According to previous reports this Buddha statue belongs to 2nd century. (Don’t know B.C or A.C)

A small transmission tower was placed on top with a solar panel to get electricity. We took about one and half hours to get on the top and return journey happened in about fort five minutes.

Eagerly looked at us…

Dhanigala / Kandegama is a range of mountains and once we tried to get on top of Dhanigala from Maduru Oya side. This journey started from Maduru Oya fishery village. Actually we just wanted to camp on the rock rather than reaching the other end (circular end). This is just to share the pictures taken on that camping trip.

Tips, Notes and Special remark
  1. Start the journey early.
  2. Leech protection methods to be followed. It is a leech paradise.
  3. Stick on Google map.
  4. Better wear an attire and gloves.
  5. Carry a knife or “Manna Pihiya”-මන්නාපිහිය.
  6. There were water sources on our way to top of Pathangala. Better carry at least 500ml per person.
  7. It is a strenuous hike as we have to fight with Bamboos. We got almost 6 hours to reach the highest point. But return journey was made in two and half hours.
  8. The highest point of Pathangala is not suitable to fly a drone as it has no flat surface.
  9. Though you are using Google map to find the direction better clarify with locals. They are friendly and no objections for the hike.
  10. There are buses from Matale to Polwattakanada.

  • Pathangala /පතන්ගල (1515m)-The bamboo forest

Pathangala is another prominent peak situated in Knuckles forest reserve. It is the giant standing just in front of popularly visiting Riverstone peak. Riverstone peak might be the most visited mountain in Knuckles Forest reserve. Therefore most of the people who visit Riverstone must have noted this peak. Though it is called as Riverstone by majority, old term is Kirimetiya Kanda (It is mentioned in metric map). Bata Anduwa Gap (බට අඩුව කපොල්ල) is situated in between Pathangala and Riverstone Mountain (Kirimetiya Kanda) /කිරිමැටිය කන්ද.

Pathangala, Riverstone and Bata Anduwa gap in metric map. Click image to enlarge.

How it is shown in Google map.

Pathangala was in my to-do list for a long time. Surprisingly I have first noted this mountain when I visited at Karagahathenna MWE, not at Riverstone. Later when I discussed with Harinda, got to know the name called Kawudamana (කවුඩාමාන) also for Pathangala. Luckily I knew Ashan and Chamara also had same intention to hike this mountain.

My first experience of Pathangala, when I was at Karagahathenna MWE.

View of Pathangala from Knuckles-Kirigalpoththa

What I mentioned earlier it as a typical mountain because Pathangala slopes to almost each directions. After analyzing Google map we decided to get the path from Dankanda (දන්කන්ද) village. There was a by road to Dankanda just after passing Raththota town. We have passed Dankanda, Polwatta Kanda and end at the last line houses situated closer to Pathangala. It is called Kattarathenna. Our vehicle was parked closer to Dankanda Tamil School. Pathangala was standing behind Katarathenna line houses. Though we have analyzed the Google map well it is better get directions from locals as well. According to one estate workers there is a path to the top of the mountain (But we didn’t come across). After passing last line houses we have reached the Kovil called Siva Sumbramaniyam Kovil. The kovil is situated at fairly higher place to have a nice surrounding view. Pathangala is situated in between Maussakanda (මාඋස්සාකන්ද) and Riverstone. Etipola and Wilshire appeared above the edge of Maussakanda. We were lucky enough to have a clear weather to see Kirigalpoththa, Gombaniya and Yakunge Hela.

Early morning view of Pathangala from Dankanda. But actual peak is not this. Far beyond this.

Team is ready for the hike. After a long time I have joined with Ashan and Chamara.

Blessed with clear weather

After passing the Kovil we have crossed a water stream and entered an area with abounded tea bushes. There was a clear foot path through this bushy area but it ended at the same water stream at higher position. Here onwards we followed the water stream for certain distance. It was bit difficult to follow the stream with it’s slope and we have entered the forest in left side of the stream. Real challenge of this hike started then onwards. Either side of the stream was covered with thickly grown Bamboo. Therefore someone has to make a path through Bamboo by knife (Sampath did a great job here). It was a time consuming and a hard work to hike though this Bamboo area. We have experienced Bamboo till we reached the peak in this hike. Therefore I would like to mention it as a Bamboo forest. Thickly grown Bamboo make damp environment which is suitable for leeches. We have noted high leech density of leech in the forest. All these factors made the journey hard and time consuming.

After the Kovil

Coming out of the forest…

Note it’s full of Bamboo.

Thickly grown Bamboo

Fairly good area with less bushes

Having a break. It was hard to find a place to have a rest due to leeches.

Something to bite at rest

There was small slab rock in half way of the journey to give a relief from tiresome journey. We had enjoyed the surrounding view from there. When you study the Google map you may notice a flat area just before the peak. The density of Bamboo has gone down when we reached this flat area. There was a water stream to fill our thirsty and plan the rest of the hike.

The stream…

Brings back to childhood

Google map revealed this stream origins from the peak and we followed the stream till we reached an open area where all the peaks of Pathangala were seen. Walking along the stream is an easy task compared to our first experience of the hike. This open area was a marshy land and we found the direction of the highest peak with aid of the Google map. The final ascent was happened through short bushes and we have reached a small rock situated between two peaks of Pathangala. The peak in right side is closer to Riverstone, but we didn’t attempt to reach it. This small rock likes a flat form with 360 degree view. We have enjoyed the view of Riverstone, Kirigalpoththa-Knuckles, Gombaniya, Yakunge Hela, Sudu Gala, Knuckles Five Peaks, Alugal Lena Kanda, Thunhisgala, Kalu Ganga Reservoir, Pitawala Pathana etc.

The final peak / highest point is situated about 500-750m away from this rocky surface. We have walked along the ridge of the mountain and entered the bamboo area again. It was happy to come across some mountainous forest here in addition to Bamboo. The highest point has a concreted base, most probably a tower has been there a time ago. We were able to watch the unseen part of Knuckles range and Dambulla-Matale area: Gammaduwa, Karagahathenna, Maussakanda, Yakkuragala, Gedaragala Pathana, Lenadora, Kadigala, Manikdena, Beliyaknada, Ambokka, Karagahathenna MWE etc. After getting enough pictures from top of Pathangala we have rushed to reach the starting point. It took around two and half hours to reach the starting point.

Tips, Notes and Special remark
  1. Start the journey early.
  2. Leech protection methods to be followed. We didn’t come across leeches except few. But can expect hundreds of them in wet condition.
  3. First bus to Kabaragala starts from Waththegama at 6.30am.Last bus from Kabaragala to Waththegama is at 6pm.
  4. Road condition is fairly good towards Kabaragala.
  5. It is a moderate strenuous hike. We spent about three hours and forty five minutes to reach the peak. But return journey happened in two and half hours.
  6. Stick on Google map.
  7. The easiest route to reach the top is to follow the stream (What I described at the end).
  8. Even in dry condition also we have noted few streams on our way to the top. But always keep 0.5-1l filled water bottle for your safety.
  9. It needs permission as it is situated in Knuckles forest reserve.
  10. Locals called whole range as Kirigalpoththa including Ensal estates.
  11. Better do this hike in a clear day rather than enjoying mist.

  • Knuckles-Kirigalpoththa / නකල්ස් කිරිගල්පොත්ත (1647m) hike

The well-known Kirigalpoththa (2388m) is the second highest mountain of SL situated in Hortain Plains. But another mountain called Kirigalpoththa is situated in Knuckles Mountain range, closer to the highest peak of Knuckles-Gombaniya
( ගොම්බානිය ).
Though I have heard of this mountain, have not seen it from another mountain till I visited Pathangala two weeks before. As weather in Knuckles range is perfect these days we were able to see Kirigalpoththa, Gombaniya and Yakunge Hela clearly. Usually it is hard to view these mountains due to permanent cloud cap covering the peaks. It is well evidenced by the Google map picture of Kirigalpoththa. But we were lucky to have a clear view of Kirigalpoththa and surroundings.

When you review Google map it would shows the easiest approach to Kirigalpoththa peak through Kabaragala area. In Kabaragala side, lower part of Kirigalpoththa is occupied by the tea estate called Kallebokka (කැලෑබොක්ක). (Actually Hulangala division of Kellabokka). Kallebokka became famous due to the Travel with Chathura programme about 360 view point situated on top of Kallebokka peak.

We have travelled from Kandy to Waththegama by train and had our breakfast from Waththegama. The first bus to Kabaragala was scheduled on 6.30am from Waththegama. After about one hour journey we got down one stop before Kabaragala buses turn. I have noted turning points to Hathalae MWE and Kallebokka view points on this journey.

The view of Kirigalpoththa range was seen beyond the tea estate. We followed the shortest path through tea estate till the trail head. Kallebokka range is situated right opposite to Kirigalpoththa range. After about one hour hike we were able to reach the estate-forest border.

Kirigalpoththa range is seen beyond Hulangala division of Kallebokka estate.

The forest boundary was marked by white-red painted cement posts and there was a clear foot path along this. This area was an Ensal estate before it recruited to Knuckles forest reserve. Still villagers can pluck Enasal without feeding bushes in this buffer zone. We have followed this clear path for certain distance and entered the forest as the path ended up at half broken hut. Gradually the undergrowth changed from Enasal to Nelu and Bamboo. We kept our direction with aid of Google maps. At one stage we had to pass an area of thickly grown Bamboo bushes. A peak was visible in front of us and later knew it as a false peak. After passing few ups and downs we have reached a place where surrounding was visible through a forest window. Then we got to know we have reached the peak of Kirigalpoththa.

Checking the map

We have reached the peak of Kirigalpoththa.

After hike of about 100m we have reached one of the peaks of Kirigalpoththa, which is totally under coverage of trees. The highest peak with large slab rock was visible from here. There was a foot path to reach this slab rock. Gradually we have reached the highest point of Kirigalpoththa where Erskine mark is situated. Erskine might be a surveyor who lived in Sri Lanka during British Colonial period. He has visited few mountains and marked his name on top of them. I have seen this Erskine mark on top of Kokagala, Galpadihela / Kosgolla and Kukulagala.

In a clear day top of Kirigalpoththa provides 360 degree view. The giant of Knuckles-Gombaniya is situated next to Kirigalpoththa and Kuda Oya flows in between them to make Thelgamu Oya. Sudugala, Lahumanagala and Maningala were standing next to Gombaniya. Only top parts of Yakunge Hela and Thunhisgala were seen above this range. Pitawala Pathana and Kaluganaga Reservoir appeared above Maningala. On the other side Pathangala, Riverstone, Matale-Hettipola road, Manikdena, Kadigala, Maussakanda, Gammaduwa, Ambokka, Etipola and Wilshire were seen. We could see Hunnasgiriya and Kellabokka peaks as well.

After enjoying the view we have followed the same path up to the peak with forest covering. There was a clear pathway (recent cut marks were there) from this peak downwards. It ended up at a small opening area which might be a marshy land in a wet day. The foot path has vanished from here but there was a dry stream. We have followed the dry stream for certain distance and noted it’s path lies in same direction we came up. It was not difficult to follow the stream and reach the estate in two hours. Though it started as dry stream, later became watery with underground springs and feeding streams. We could find a place for a bath following walk through tea estate. It ended another successful hike to one of a peak in Knuckles forest Reserve.

Following the dry stream

It is filled with water

Place to rest

At the end if I describe the easiest way to reach the peak is follow the same foot path through Enasal estate and reach the hut. Then you can get into the stream which is situated about 10/20m meters behind the hut. Follow the stream without get any turns till it end and even over dry parts. Next you will come across this small opening area. There might be a clear foot path from this opening area, if not can reach the top with forest cover with aid of Google map. (It is about 10-15min hike). But walking upstream might be a problem when stream is full.

Tips, Notes and Special remark
  1. Start the journey early in the morning as timing is very important if you plan this trip for a single day.
  2. Leech protection methods to be followed.
  3. There is a bus to Nallathanniya awaiting at Hatton railway station targeting the crowd coming by Colombo-Badulla night mail.
  4. Better avoid Hatton route in weekends and public holidays unless you are enjoying the crowd.
  5. It is a moderate strenuous hike. We have descend along the stream in fairly dry condition. Therefore it was not that much difficult. Ascend along this route might be a strenuous exercise.
  6. This trail would be difficult in wet condition. Flash floods and slippery boulders are main risks in rainy weather. Therefore be watchful if you do it in a rainy day.
  7. If you come across a difficult part along the water stream always follow the forest path.
  8. There are twelve waterfalls according to my counting. Height of the waterfalls are approximates.
  9. Last bus from Nallathanniya to Hatton is at 9.30pm. It targets Badulla-Colombo night mail.
  10. Follow rituals of Sri Pada journey as much as possible.
  11. Please maintain clean environment.
  12. The approximate distance of this trail is about 4km, from peak to fishing hut. (quoted from Shashika’s report)

  • Sri Pada-Battulu Oya-waterfall trail

After completion of Battulu Oya-Paradise Sri Pada trail I was awaiting to do Battulu Oya waterfall trail within this Sri Pada season. As I mentioned in my Battulu Oya-Paradise Sri Pada report, there are eight routes to reach sacred foot prints and these two routes related to Battulu Oya are newly introduced at Lakdasun.
Actually we have planned this trip when we were on our way to home following Battulu Oya paradise trail. Therefore Kasun and Vinoda were automatically included into the trip. After went through previous reports about this trail we have realized this as a hard trek and let’s see how hard it was.

The summary of this route is, there is a feeding stream which crosses Dehena kanda trail at base of Sri Pada. We have walked down along this stream till it joins with Battulu Oya and then moved to fishing hut to finish the trail. As we have planned this trip to a single day timing was the crucial point.
We have worshipped sacred peak early morning after hiking along Hatton route. It took about three and half hours to reach the peak along Hatton route. There was a Kiribath Dansala just above “Maha Giri Dambaya” (මහගිරි දඹය) and we tasted it. The early morning view we came across along the Hatton route was breath taking. This marked as my 13th journey to Holy peak.

Next part of the journey was to descend along Rathnapura route and get the turn to Dehena kanda route. Though I have been at Dehena kanda route thrice this is the first descend along this path. Within one hour time we have reached the water stream which crosses Dehena kanda route at base of Sri Pada.

Entering to Valley of Waterfalls

Perfect weather

Simply speaking it is the journey to descend along waterfalls. We have come across 12+ waterfalls in this route till we meet the other branch of Battulu Oya. As we did this trail in fairly dry condition, it was not difficult to getting down along waterfalls except few occasions. Soon we entered the valley of waterfalls the first waterfall came to our sight. (What Sashika mentioned as Sumudu Ella). Second fall is situated just below the first fall. After the third fall there was fairly flat section of the river before next set of waterfalls.

Gradually we have passed sixth and seventh waterfalls which were fairly large waterfalls, about 10-15 in height. As the drop of seventh waterfall was high it essentially needs to cross through the forest. Following the seventh waterfall there was a flat section of the river which reminded us the similar experience we had at Battulu Oya. The feeling was amazing when we walked along this area as it was shaded by forest and river base was covered with round boulders. We spent a time to get snaps and enjoy the beauty here. This flat river section ends at the top of eighth fall.

Here after river gets a bend with a slope and halts at a beautiful pool. We decided to get down through the forest rather than follow the stream. (Actually it is not possible to go along the river). If I consider the whole journey, this is the only difficult place an average hiker can face. There is a tiny waterfall made by the river at this section, probably eleventh waterfall.
Twelfth waterfall is the last of the trail and it is the highest out of all. (Probably 15-20m in height). It is not possible to capture the whole fall due to it’s angle.

We have spent about five hours to reach Battulu Oya from trail head at Dehena kanda route. Our next stop was at Battulu Oya near fishing hut and had a quick bath there. Though we planned to get a three wheeler from fishing hut it was not possible and walked to Raja male line houses. We had our dinner at Nallathanniya and waited for the last bus to Hatton to get into the train.

  1. Start the journey early.
  2. Leech protection methods to be followed. But we didn’t come across any Leeches due to dry weather.
  3. No water source found on our way to top after the tea estate. Carry at least 1-1.5l per person in one day hike.
  4. First bus to Hulu Ganga from Waththegama is Thawalanthenna bus at 6.30am. It reaches Hulu Ganga around 7.30am.
  5. You have to arrange a transport system from Hulu Ganga to Rathnathenna Division. We hired a three wheeler and it costs Rs 1200 to Rathnathenna division.
  6. Road condition after Alakola estate is terrible.
  7. The management of Alakola estate issues a ticket for who pass the gate at Alakola estate. We paid Rs 200 per person and ticket was given by the office.
  8. It is a moderate strenuous / easy hike as there is a clear foot pathway. We spent about four hours to reach the most popular false peak and another half an hour to true summit Gombaniya.
  9. Though it said false peak of Gombaniya is extremely windy we didn’t have that experience.
  10. Having a guide is an advantage, but not necessary. We followed Google maps.
  11. Hulu Ganga Falls at Hulu Ganga and Taliya Watuna Ella at Alakola estate are two additional to this trip.

  • Gombaniya/ගොම්බානිය (1906m)-Highest of Knuckles mountain range

Gombaniya range is considered as the highest peak of Knuckles massif. It’s height goes beyond 1900m. (1906m).Though I have been at different peaks at Knuckles Mountain Range, Gombaniya was in to-do list for a long time.

Majestic view of Gombaniya range from Rathnathenna

Gombaniya from Knuckles- Kirigalpoththa

Gombaniya is pointed. This was taken on our way to Pathangala

Gombaniya range is from Kellabokka estate.

Gombaniya range is situated at Alakola estate in Hulu Ganga. It is margined by Knuckles-Kirigalpoththa and Yakunge Hela (යක්කුන්ගේ හෙල) ranges in either side. Approach to Gombaniya is easy from Rathnathenna division in Alakola Estate. Gombaniya range has number of false peaks and well known false peak has large slab rock with beautiful view. Actual peak is situated about 500m away from this false peak.

I have coupled this hike with Yakunge Hela in a week end. My recent observation of weather in Knuckles range was perfect. So our initial plan was to hike Yakunge Hela in Day-1 and start Gombaniya Hike in same day. Then we planned to camp in half way of Gombaniya hike. Due to various reasons we were not able to implement our plans on time. As a result we have decide to camp at base of Gombaniya at Rathnathenna estate. There are two summer huts at Rathnathenna division. One situated at higher level which is fairly old and it’s roof has been is collapsed as well. Newest one is situated much lower level. We have decided to camp at newly established summer hut at Rathnathenna Division.

ගිනි තපිනවා

This is a one day hike to the highest point of Gombaniya range and we have moved to other end of the range as well. Depend on our previous day experience (Yakunge Hela) we knew mist would come up by 12 noon of the day. Therefore we had to start as early as possible. The journey was started from Rathnathenna at 6.15 am. We kept our all unnecessary stuff at line house. The guy of line house mentioned there is a clear pathway on top of Gombaniya and he sent two people to show the pathway from tea estate. We have passed the playground of upper line house and stopped for early breakfast. As we thought we can find this clear pathway easily we have sent them to the line house.
After the breakfast we directly hiked through the forest to the ridge. Actually it is the only difficult part of the hike. (Though we thought we can find the foot pathway, we couldn’t). The back drop of the scenery was filled with Knuckles five peaks, Kandasamigala and Thawalanthenna side. After about 30-45min hike through the Bamboo forest we were able to reach the ridge of the range where other side was visible. Then only we came across so called “clear foot pathway”. We were able to identify Kellabokka range, Hathalae MWE and a part of Knuckles-Kirigalpoththa range.

Now onwards a clear path was visible.

Most of the time the foot path was easily identifiable. The ridge of Gombaniya is covered with Bamboo and Nelu bushes. Foot path goes through these forest area and we came across number of open areas as well. And there were multiple view points with slab rocks. It was a journey with ups and downs and from one view point to another till we reached the so called the “peak of Gombaniya”. It seems the range extends beyond this peak and rest of the range is higher than this popular peak.
This false peak provides 360 degree view towards Yakunge Hela, Kuda Oya, Walpolamulla side, Kirigalpoththa and Kellabokka side. Though others mentioned about extreme windy condition on top of false peak, we didn’t have such experience. Someone has camped few meters below this peak, might be due to windy condition. Mist was rising from the gap between Gombaniya and Yakunge Hela. Therefore we said good bye to the false peak and continued the journey along the ridge.

The foot path continues along the ridge and after another 4/5 false peaks we have reached the exact highest point of Gombaniya / highest of Knuckles massif. It has very limited area and collection of round stones. This indicates many people have been here as well. Bushes of Rhododendrons sp. were more common on top of Gombaniya than Nelu and Bamboo. The foot path was less clear after the false peak. Soon we arrived the true peak surrounding was covered with the mist.

  • Hike to Darmarajagala /ධර්මරාජගල (1900m+)

Darmarajagala (ධර්මරාජගල) is situated in peak wilderness closer to Bana Samonala Gala (2010m) (බෑණ සමනල ගල). Some people name Bana Samonala Gala and Darmarajagala as two peaks of single mountain-Bana Samonala. British have identified these two peaks as false peaks (as it’s similarity to Sri Pada) and twin peaks (as they are almost identical). However I would like to identify them as two mountains-Bana Samonala Gala and Darmarajagala rather than two peaks of Bana Samonala Mountain.

Bana Samonala Gala and Darmarajagala. Some identify it as two peaks of Bana Samonala Mountain.

Darmarajagala (1900m+). This is the classic appearance from Sri Pada Uda Maluwa.

View of Darmarajagala from Kunu Diya Parwathaya. Darmarajagala is pointed.

Though hikers visit at Bana Samonala Gala, they give less attention to Darmarajagala. I thought of finish this hike within this Sri Pada season.
As usual we have started the hike from Nallathanniya-Hatton. We were able to reach Uda Maluwa (උඩ මළුව) via Hatton route by two and half hours, probably my best timing for Sri Pada hike. Sacred foot print was closed for morning Poojawa. We started to step down along Rathnapura route.

Vikum and Chamara

Our starting point of Darmarajagala was same as Bana Samonala Gala-Seetha Gangula at Rathnapura route. But we didn’t follow the main water stream and straight away got into the forest. After about 100m hike we came across a small water stream and it ended up at rock face of Darmarajagala. Here onwards we had to spend much time for rock climbing with aid of small bushes attached to rocks. So middle part of the hike is bit tough and time consuming. As weather was clear in morning hours we were able to identify Sri Pada and some land marks of Rathnapura route. After hike through rock face of Darmarajagala we have entered the forest with Nelu and Bamboo under growth. It was a continuous hike through this forest area and reached the summit of Darmarajagala which is having a forest. One significant thing is finding large number of flies on bushes of Darmarajagala. They were really disturbing. We were searching for the rock surface shown at Google map just beneath the summit assuming it might be a view point.

Came to an open area after initial hike.

Perfect weather in morning hours. This was turned to misty with time and rain started in evening.

There was a sloping rock facing to Bana Samonala Gala side. This is a good view point towards Bana Samonala Gala, but bit risky due to sheer drop. As surrounding was misty we were waiting there till it gets clear. Then we have moved to the other side hoping to get a clear view towards Kunu Diya Parwathaya and surrounding. But it didn’t happen due to thick mist.

We didn’t come across a trace of any foot pathway or animal path in this journey. And there was no trace that anybody has visited the peak before. In return journey we straight away got down through the forest rather than follow our initial pathway. Here we had to get some risky steps in getting down, because we had to rush as rain was around the corner. We were able to reach trail head in 2hours time and luckily rain starts once we reached Rathnapura trail.

Tips, Notes and Special remark
  1. Leech protection methods to be followed.
  2. Start the journey early.
  3. Don’t try in wet days (Rainy or misty) as rock is slippery
  4. Carry at least 1-1.5l per person.
  5. It is a strenuous hike and we spent about 4 hours to reach the peak. It has a part of rock climbing as well. Having a rope is good for safety.
  6. The top of Sphinx-2 is a narrow area. It is completely covered by bushes of Rhododendrons sp.
  7. No place for camping. When you get on to these bushes can have 360 degree view. No water on top.
  8. There is only a small open area at slope where you can sit.
  9. As it is situated at Knuckles forest reserve you need permission.
  10. It get about 2.5-3 hours to reach the base of the rock from Loolewatta-Meemure road. It is a continuous ascend after crossing the water stream. There is a clear foot path from line house to certain extent but villagers don’t like outsiders to visit this area. (what we felt)
  11. Analyze the Google map and stick on it. But sometimes it may mislead you.

  • Knuckles Sphinx-2 / කිනිහිරිගල-2 (1500+m)

There are two square shaped rocks situated at Knuckles massif closer to Corbett’s gap named as Sphinx-1 and Sphinx-2 or Kinihirigala-1 (කිනිහිරිගල-1) and Kinihirigala-2. Sphinx-1 (1400m+) is not seen at Corbett’s gap, but can be captured on your way to Corbett’s gap or after passing the gap, as it is situated just behind the gap. Sphinx-2 is situated just beyond the gap. Therefore it can be seen easily from the gap and on your way to Meemure after passing the gap.

What is the mean of Sphinx?
It is a mythological creature with a lion’s body and a human head, an important image in Egyptian and Greek art and legend. Sometimes winged sphinx comes in Greek legends. The earliest and most famous example in art is the Great Sphinx (a pyramid) at Giza at Egypt. This is known to be a portrait statue of the king Khafra.
Asian Sphinx has additional wings to the lion body. (Quoted from https://www.britannica.com)

As these two rocks also have similar appearance of sphinx, named as Sphinx in Colonial era when they mapped Knuckles range. (Most probable reason) Seems Sphinx-2 has more sphinx appearance than sphinx-1.

Sphinx-1

Sphinx-2

Sphinx-1 and Sphinx-2 in one picture. This was taken at Loolewatta-Meemure road.

Sphinx-2 is known a difficult hike due to slope of the rock. It has very less connection with nearby mountains. Therefore it is difficult to find a place to get on the rock. You can’t get a clear idea of the rock even looking at Google map. Closer analysis of pictures would reveal it has two rocks, consists of main rock with summit and side small one. Aliyawetunaela Mountain is situated behind Sphinx-2 (when you stand at Loolewatta-Meemure road) and there are some peaks in between these two. If someone tries to approach the base of Sphinx-2 from Thangappuwa side it needs to pass Aliyawetunaela Mountain and all these peaks as well. The approach from Loolewatta-Meemure road is also time consuming as ascend is more. Though you reach the base of the rock with all these difficulties, it has only few places to get on the rock.
Therefore all these factors make this hike difficult.

As it is a difficult hike, I had to attempt different times to understand the geography of this rock. We have reached the base of rock all the times but unable to find a place to get on it. Sometimes it was difficult to try at some places due to slippery rock in damp condition. But at the end it gave me a clear idea about this majestic rock than other mountains.

First attempt-21/12/2018
In my first attempt I tried to reach the base of the rock from Loolewatta-Meemure road. We four (Keshan, Nuwan, Chathura and Myself) travelled from Hunnasgiriya to Corbett’s gap and just passed the line house below Corbett’s gap. Then entered the forest. There was a clear foot path to certain extent (As there is a toddy spot) and it was a continuous ascend till we reached the base. Later we got to know lower part of this forest is still belongs to an estate. People at line house don’t like out siders to visit here (most probably illegal toddy business).
There was few potential places at rock to attempt the summit from base in this side. But we didn’t try much due to damp weather and as we didn’t have a rope. We were able to get a nice view of Dumbanagala in this journey.

Toddy spot… It is situated closer to the line houses. There is a clear foot path up to this.

Nuwan, Chathura and Keshan were members of the journey. This is a one place we came across 90 degree angle rock

Second attempt-31/12/2018
This was my second attempt to Sphinx-2 from different side. It was part of two days trip and we have visited at Sphinx-1 in first day. Sphinx-2 approach was through Aliyawetunaela Mountain. We have passed the peak of Aliyawetunaela and rest of the mountain range between Sphinx-2 and Aliyawetunaela. Here using of Google map was bit confused as we came across few drops where getting down is impossible. There was a steep drop at final descend and ended up at western edge of Sphinx rock. This was very narrow area and drops were in either side. As the rock was dripping with mist and due to time factor we didn’t proceed further. We were able to view Sphinx-1 and Gerandigala with Garandi falls in this journey. First time we got a clear idea about the top of Sphinx-2.

Eshan and Tharindu were in this journey.

Third attempt-06/01/2019
After failing two times I was really disappointed and decided to give another try after one week of second attempt with a rope. Here we approached the base of the rock as same as our first visit. We have crossed to the other border of the rock in this time. With aid of bushes we have hiked certain extent along the rock and found some possible places to get on the rock. Although we had the rope, we didn’t like to get unnecessary risk. After this attempt I decided to not to spend further time on this rock for certain time.

Though it was unsuccessful we enjoyed the journey

Though I have lost my hopes on Sphinx-2, Wikum who was a member of my third journey was ready to find possible places to get on the rock. Wikum was able to reach the summit of Sphinx-2 in his second attempt with his friends.

Successful journey to Sphinx-2
Exactly after three months of my last attempt, I was able to conquer this majestic Sphinx rock. All credit should go to Wikum to accompany me to top of Sphinx-2. We have spent about four hours to reach the top of Sphinx-2 with aid of rope as well.
The top of Sphinx-2 is a narrow place and completely covered with short bushes. (This was tally with our previous observation). We have stood on these short bushes to get the view from top. Here you can get 360 degree view including Aliyawetunaela Mountain, Knuckles Five Peaks, Alugal Lena Mountain and top part of Alugal Lena cave, Meemure side, Lakegala, Dumbanagala, Balalgira, Corbett’s gap, Loolewatta to Meemure road and Koboneelagala etc. It was not a good time to look for second line mountains as mist was around. After spending about an hour on top we just stepped down to the tiny open area situated at slope of Sphinx-2. It was just enough to sit for 2/3 people. We were managed to make return journey in 3 hour’s time. So at the end I was able to achieve my dream in 4th attempt.

  • No drinking water found along the route or on top of the mountain.
  • Camping would be bit difficult at Lunugala peak due to windy condition. But we have noted some have camped there. Then you have to carry water.
  •  DS rock
  • Trekking to DS rock is fairly easy hike. We followed the foot path through tea estate till end the range. It took about 1-1.5hours to reach the top from main road.
  • You can’t get on the rock due to it’s bouldering arrangement.
  • We have noted some wasp at DS rock. Therefore don’t make sounds to disturb them.

  • Lunubissa / ලුණුබිස්ස (1340m) and DS rock

Cocogalla Mini World’s end / Pitamaruwa MWE is a great tourist attraction in these days. When we camped at Cocogalla MWE in 2017 August, it was coupled with another two hikes-before and after the camping. We have hiked Lunubissa / Lunugala peak on the day of camping. Lunubissa peak is situated at Passara-Madolsima road before Madolsima town. DS rock would get attraction of any one who travel to Mini world’s end as it is situated near Cocogalla. After camping, we have done a short hike to DS rock.

Lunubissa / Lunugala Mountain
It is marked at metric map as Lunubissa Mountain, but people call it as Lunugala peak. This peak is clearly visible to Passara bus stand as a mountain with flat summit.

Lunubissa Mountain in metric map. The height is marked in feet. 4396ft. Click image to enlarge.

Lunugala Mountain in Google map. The peak is marked in star. Trail head is shown by the arrow and black line indicates our path.

We have got the first bus to Cocogalla from Passara, which is scheduled at 6.30am. Our starting point was the three way junction at Passara-Madolsima-Madawalagama roads. (At B360 road)
Lunubissa / Lunugala hike is a fairly easy one can be finished in 1-1.5 hours’ time. Basically this mountain has more open areas with short bushes, most probably due to quartz on the floor. Therefore we had beautiful surrounding view since beginning. Loggal Oya valley is always behind us and Namunukula was standing on side of us. Middle of the hike we came across a flat area where main peak was visible on side. Main peak of Lunugala is fairly flat and we have experienced a gusty wind there. Before the main peak there were few false peaks and we had rest over there. When you reached the top you will understand it is a hike along the ridge of the mountain.

DS rock
This unique shaped rock is seen when we are heading to Cocogalla MWE / Pitamaruwa MWE. As it’s similar to face of Hon. D.S.Senanayake, people called it as D.S Rock. Still I can remember when I saw this rock first time while travelling to Cocogalla MWE in 2012, I asked from Saman (He worked at nearby hospital and was my guide at that time) about how to reach on top of it. He replied villagers usually don’t visit there. Five years later I was able to visit at DS Rock with him.
This hike was done at following day of Cocogalla MWE camping. It was not difficult to map out the path to DS rock. DS rock is situated at a drop of a mountain range which is occupied by a tea estate.
We have walked back from Cocogalla MWE towards Kokagala and got the by road to reach the edge of this mountain range. We have gone through tea estate and reached the end of the range where a summer hut is situated. The top of DS rock is seen to this summer hut. There was a descend from here to the DS rock, through shrubs and no foot pathway.

2. Statue of Millangoda tusker
3. Willara Falls / Nona Ella
4. Maligathenna RMW

Mathula Alu Lena / Aloka Viharaya (7.246135, 80.386567) මාතුල අලු ලෙන / ආලෝක විහාරය

Route: Kegalle-Aththanagoda road-> Alu Lena / Aloka Viharaya

Alu Lena is situated just walking distance from Kegalle-Aththanagoda road. This pre historical cave has been converted into a cave temple with a drip ledge. Presence of ashes (alu) on the floor causes it’s name Alu Lena.

A number of faunal and human specimens have been found covered with a calcium encrustation. Dr. Shiran Deraniyagala visited the site in 1954 discovered lithic and skeletal materials in a single test pit. They have found snail and mollusk shells, bones of Deer, Monkey, Buffalo and stone tools as well.
(Summarized from Amazing Lanka site)

Locals believe this is the place where writing of Thripitaka (ත්‍රිපිටක) in Pali occurred in King Walagamaba period. Currently the temple occupies the whole premises of Alu Lena.

Millangoda Appuhamy of Molagoda, Kegalle. Millangoda Raja participated in Kandy Esala Perahara for nearly 40 years and also carried the casket of tooth relic. This tusker died on July 30th 2011 at the age of 73.
His body was preserved and placed on public display in museum.

There was a by road in right side towards the mini hydro power station. We have passed this power station and followed the foot path further to reach the waterfall. Molagoda-Aththanagoda road goes in other side of this water stream and this waterfall is faintly seen from there. (But difficult to reach from there)

Willara Ella is a cascade with three parts situated at Molagoda-Kegalle. It is formed by Anda Dola (ආදා දොළ).
We have reached the lowest part of the fall and walked upstream to view the entire fall. Willara Falls has three parts: Upper part is about 7m tall, middle part is 6m and lower part is 4m.
Earlier it was named as Nona Ella and later it is called Willara Falls to commemorate Mr. Jayantha Willara who was journalist of Kegalle district. One of estate superintendent has killed his wife and put into this fall during colonial era might be the reason for name-Nona Ella.

Kurulu Kale (කුරුලු කැලේ) is a forest reserve situated at Kegalle town. Earlier it had a giant “Yodha Pus Wela”-යෝධ පුස් වැල. Our next target was to visit at Giant “Pus Wela” but got to know it was dead for a time ago when we visited there.

Then we have reached Moronthota (මොරොන්තොට) in Kegalle-Bulathkohupitya road (A21) and followed Arandara (අරන්දර) road. Arandara road goes parallel with Gurugoda Oya (ගුරුගොඩ ඔය). As public transport system is poor in Moronthota-Arandara road, we hired a 3w to Maligathenna RMW. A vehicle can be driven up to the temple.

Maligathenna RMW / මාළිගාතැන්න රජමහා විහාරය (7.176504, 80.336202)
Maligathenna RMW is situated at a peak of 239m height. It is one of the place where King Walagamaba has stayed when south Indian invaders ruled the country.
Though it is a RMW, we can see a modern day temple with Stupa, Bo tree and image house. As it is situated at an edge of a hill, provides nice surrounding view including Gurugoda Oya.

Galgediyana Falls was the last visit of the day. We have walked towards Moronthota again and got down to Gurugoda Oya just after the dam to reach Galgediyana falls. (There is a foot path from main road to this place)

Galgediyana Falls / ගල්ගෙඩියාන ඇල්ල (7.175485, 80.344055) (5m)
Galgediyana Falls is situated in Gurugoda Oya after 3km from Moronthota town. It is a wide waterfall (? 50m) as situated along the river. A dam is built across Gurugoda Oya, just above Galgediyana Falls. This waterfall has two steps.
Gurugoda Oya gets birth from Dothaluwa Mountain, passes Kegalle and Galigamuwa areas to join with Seethawaka Oya Ruwanwella.

Tips, Notes and Special remark
  1. Leech protection methods to be used.
  2. Start the journey early.
  3. Always we followed the right side of the stream except in one instance.
  4. This journey can be divided into three parts: Walking along Pedro scout camp road, clear road in Kandapola forest reserve and waterfall section.
  5. Appearance of waterfalls is different from Ahsan’s pictures as water level was low. And I captured waterfalls in other direction.
  6. It is not a simple descend along the river. There are ups and downs.
  7. It is a moderate strenuous journey. We have spent 10 hours to reach the base of Bomburu falls from Boralanda. But this can be managed in 6-8hours. Leisure walking along the road, spent more time at first three waterfalls and rain were the causes for 10 hours.
  8. Carry something to eat. As you have unlimited water hungry might be the problem.
  9. There is a bus from Nuwera Eliya to Bomburu Ella village. Last bus from Bomburu Ella village to Nuwera Eliya at 4.15pm. After that you have to get a three wheel to Rendapola junction. It costs Rs 500.
  10. Doing this waterfall journey in other way round might be strenuous as you have to climb more.

  • Upper Bomburu Cascades /ඉහළ බෝඹුරු ඇලි….

Bomburu Ella is one of the widest cascades of Sri Lanka (might be the widest), situated in Badulla district. It is formed by a main tributary of Uma Oya, called Duulgolla Oya (දූල්ගොල්ල ඔය) / Bomburu Ella Oya (බෝඹුරු ඇල්ල ඔය) in metric map (named as fort McDonald River in colonial age). When I first visited at Bomburu Ella in 2014, I was able to reach the top of Bomburu Ella and noticed another beautiful waterfall with a base pool. Ashan has trekked Bomburu Ella from Bomburu reservoir at Nuwera Eliya and found eight waterfalls situated above Bomburu Ella including the one I have been in 2014.
I also wanted to do this journey from Bomburu reservoir to Bomburu Ella with enjoying eight cascades.

It is bit problematic to visit at uncommon places due to current situation of the country as everyone look in suspicious eyes at big back packs. But it is so difficult to be at home in a free weekend as I am used to travel in every weekend.

Shen who is a new chap for travelling, joined with me this time to travel to Nuwera Eliya. We have selected mid night bus to reach Nuwera Eliya around 5.30am. After having few snacks from Nuwera Eliya town we got into a bus to reach Boralanda in Udupussallawa road.
My plan was to reach Bomburu reservoir from Boralanda as it is much easier to reach their by bus. We started to walk from Boralanda but didn’t get questions from anyone as most of villages were sleeping. With aid of Google map we were able to reach Pedro scout camp road. We have crossed another beautiful waterfall just before reach the road.

First waterfall of the day. I had only lateral view of this waterfall.

It is about 10m tall and flows to Bomburu Ella Reservoir.

Pedro scout camp road goes through a Eucalyptus patch. It ends at Bomburu reservoir which is built across Duulgolla Oya to supply water to area. This area was considered as a shooting area of Nuwera Eliya. Pedro scout camp (as it is situated closer to Pedro estate) is situated just beneath Bomburu reservoir.

Pedro scout camp road goes through Eucalyptus patch

Bomburu reservoir is built across Duulgolla Oya. Initial purpose of this lake was to supply water to Welimada area.

It is a shooting area of Nuwera Eliya

After got disturbance by Bomburu Ella reservoir, Duulgolla Oya / Bomburu Ella Oya re starts it’s journey to join with Uma Oya. There is a clear road at right side of the stream, parallel to it.
This road was used for logging in old days but it has been abounded for a long time. So next part of the journey was to walk along this road which ends as a foot pathway. According to Ahsan’s measurement it is about 5km walk along this road which runs at the slope of Oya. As Google map doesn’t show significant waterfalls at this section we didn’t try to get into the river while walking. (Actually all these waterfalls are situated closer to Bomburu Ella.)

Initially we were bit confuse in finding the entry point of this road. Here Chamara came for my help over the phone and mentioned it is just a by road before the reservoir but we were not able to find it. We followed the right side of the river and luckily found the road after certain distance. At beginning it was a walk under Eucalyptus trees. Later we have entered the forest cover of Kandapola reserve. We had enough rests and noted number of stream crossing the road to join with Duulgolla Oya / Bomburu Ella reservoir.

At beginning it is a clear road.

Eucalyptus were the main trees

This road gradually becomes a foot pathway and disappeared at the end. We have checked the Google map and understood this as the point to descend to the river. After about 500m distance, we have reached top of 1st waterfall. It was the beginning of waterfall section. First and second waterfalls are situated closer to each other. As the water level of the river is fairly low we didn’t get the full picture of waterfalls. We followed the right side of Duulgolla Oya and reached base of second waterfall. Both first and second waterfalls were cascades with few steps.

Summary of the journey: white line shows approximate path from Boralanda to scout camp road. Then we followed right side of Duulgolla Oya.

After second waterfall there was a huge drop towards the base of third fall. Here we had to go up in the forest and then descend to the base of third fall. This was time consuming and no other option to reach base of third falls. As Ashan mentioned, third fall is the largest out of all and bigger than Bomburu Falls as well.

Third waterfall is seen when we descend…

After the hard trek along right side of the river, we had a long rest at the base of third fall. Though Ashan has crossed the stream at this point, we have decided to follow the right side in rest of the journey. In about 500m downstream walk, we have reached top of fourth water fall. It was not difficult to get down along the waterfall as water level was low. After enjoying 4th cascade it seems bit difficult to follow the right side of the stream. Then we have changed the trek to left side and reached next waterfall.

I was bit confused about the 5th waterfall as the next one was not tally with the picture at Ashan’s report. But later I realized I was at the middle of 5th fall and he has taken the picture at the base of the fall. When we were getting down along 5th fall weather was changed and rain started. But it lasted for 15-20minutes.

At the middle of 5th fall we have changed the trek to right side again and reached the base of waterfall No.05. The sky was getting black now and signs for another rain was there. We have rushed to reach 6th waterfall. Waterfall No.06 has two parts in my observation. After the rain it seems active.

On the way to 8th fall (the one just above Bomburu falls) we have missed the 7th fall. Appearance of Eucalyptus patch means we are closer to Bomburu Ella. There was a descend from Eucalyptus patch to the base of 8th fall with aid of short bushes. While in the descend rain started cats and dog. We ran back under Eucalyptus patch and waited rain get settle. It lasted about 45minutes and we were drench soaked with rain at the end. It was bit challenge to reach the base of 8th fall with slippery rocks.

Waterfall No.08.

Though I have reached top of Bomburu Falls from bottom, I couldn’t remember the exact pathway. We have spent a time to find a way to getting down from top of Bomburu Ella. Here Shashi came to help me over the phone. When you stand at base of 8th fall with facing the last fall, there is a fainted foot path on top of Bomburu falls towards the forest patch in your left hand side. (Later I reminded this is the way I managed to come to the top of waterfall) Descend from top of Bomburu Falls was bit time consuming and we were able to reach the base by 4pm. So we have spent 10 hours for whole journey from Boralanda to base of Bomburu Ella.

How it starts…

This is our waterfalls sketch at the end. Appreciate the drop at WF No.03. Then WF No.07 must be below 6th fall. Click image to start.

After getting refreshed from Bomburu Falls we have walked to Bomburu Ella village. On the way we had some Roti and tea from a small boutique. We got a three wheel from Bomburu Ella village to Rendapola junction to get a bus to Nuwera Eliya. It ended another successful waterfall journey.

  • Last day of Sri Pada season-2019

Annually Sri Pada season begins on December full moon poya day and ends at day after Wesak poya day. Traditional procession of first day of Sri Pada begins at Galpoththawa RMV (ගල්පොත්තාව රජමහා විහාරය) at Pelmadulla. They carry the idol of God Saman, Sadhathuka Karanduwa (සධාතුක කරඩුව), and jewelries in this procession along the two main routes of Sri Pada: Hatton and Rathnapura. Once these thing are kept at Uda Maluwa of Sri Pada at auspicious time, the gates are opened for public to worship sacred foot print. Sri Pada season lasts for six months and ends at Wesak full moon poya day. Next day morning these sacred items are carried with procession to Galpoththawa RMW along two routes to end the season. Then gates are closed for the public for next six months.
This year Sri Pada season rewarded me a lot of hikes as I expected: Kunudiya Parwathaya, Bana Samonala, Darmarajagala, Battulu Oya waterfall trail, Battulu Oya paradise trail.
As this was a successful season, I decided to visit at Sri Pada at the end of 2019 too.
In 2014 I had a chance to watch the opening ceremony of Sri Pada season of 2015.
This time I got participation of two of my friends (Chathura and Prasad) who were amateur (“Kodu”) for Sri Pada journey. On our return journey along Kuruwita road we met Chamara with his wife and we were able to finish the journey together.

Prasad and Myself started the journey from Pettah by train and reached Hatton station by 2.30am. (One hour after regular time). Chathura who travelled from Haputhale awaited at station to join with me. Surprisingly we were the only group came from train to hike Sri Pada and expected bus was not there. Therefore we had to hire a three wheeler to Nallathanniya.

Journey begins from Nallathanniya at 4am. The Easter attack has affected on Sri Pada pilgrimage as well. After this incidence there were less number of pilgrims and we were the only group hiked Sri Pada in that early morning. Considerable number of shops at Hatton route were closed due to lack of pilgrims.
Chathura and Prasad tried their maximum to follow rituals in this journey. They were vegetarian during last three days and we worshiped Lord Buddha and God Sumana Saman at begin of the journey. Getting refresh at Seetha Gangula (සීත ගගුල) is also a tradition in Sri Pada pilgrimage but we didn’t follow due to cold weather. We have enjoyed the sun rise at Geththampana (ගෙත්තම්පාන). Pilgrims who were getting down advised us to be hurry as Uda Maluwa (උඩ මළුව) would be closed soon after the closing ceremony. By 6.45 am we were able to reach Uda Maluwa where closing ceremony of Sri Pada season was going on.

When we reached Uda Maluwa traditional activities were carried out and gates were closed for a while. There were group of people who were ready for carrying sacred items in procession. They have dressed in white and covered the head with white cloth. Pilgrims were waiting at the entrance of Rathnapura side to get blessings of processions. After finishing traditional activities at Uda Maluwa procession started. The idol of God Saman, Sadhathuka Karanduwa (සධාතුක කරඩුව) and jewelries were carried at procession along Rathnapura route. We got to know the procession along Hatton route would be held around 2.30pm. Most of the pilgrims who were in Uda Maluwa have followed the procession.

We have met Chamara and Shani at Galwangediya junction. Here we separated from the procession and continued our journey along Kuruwita-Erathna route. I have been at Kuruwita route in 2013 as a night hike in off season. But this is a different experience in season at day time.
The distance from Galwangediya junction to Adawikanda-අඩවි කන්ද (where Kuruwita trail starts) is about 11km. Major part of Kuruwita route has foot pathway or gravel road which is comfortable for foot rather than concrete steps. We have passed Indikatupana / Geththampana, Medahinna Ambalama (මැදහින්න අම්බලම), Demala Mala Hinna (දෙමළ මල හින්න), Seetha Gangula and reached Warnagala Ambalama (වර්ණගල අම්බලම). From Warnagala you can follow traditional foot path to end up at Adawikanda. There is gravel road to Warnagala from Adawikanda. We have followed this road and reached Adawikanda to end another successful Sri Pada journey.

  • මහගඟ දිගේ Waterfall trail

This journey for a change was an idea of Irantha. He persuaded us to join us in a venture to explore the unexplored and the eager to explore the unexplored was enough of a reason for us to join in. Our main obstacle was the transport mode so we had to hire a trishaw all the way from Chilaw to Lebonon estate early in the morning. From Lebonon we tackled the mana covered path to Reach Rathnagiriya. From Rathnagiriya it was clear path to KMP. Just before KMP we reached “Maha ganga” where we re united with Irantha who had stayed the previous day at KMP.

From Maha ganga crossing point of KMP trail we decided to go along the stream and within 20 minutes we reached the first obstacle which was the first fall. This provides some fascinating views towards Ethanwala, Rambukoluwa and beyond. Since Irantha has done the initial stretch previously he guided us from the left sided foot path towards “Kuda ela maga” and we descended along foot path towards the bottom. There were two waterfalls formed by “kuda ela maga” at this point and after forming those cascades it joined Maha ganga. After enjoying those two waterfalls we walked towards the main waterfall of Maha ganga and Irantha decided to name it as Enasal waththa ella. This was a gorgeous beauty which we leaned back and enjoyed the view for some time. There was a foot path from the base of this waterfall which would lead towards KMP too. From here on wards we descended along the river and we came across another footpath to the right which led us towards a burnt down “Wadiya”.

Next beauty was called Majestic falls and we descended from the right side to reach its middle level and the base. Not so far away from the base of the Majestic falls was a steep drop which Irantha couldn’t get down on his previous attempt. We took a considerable deviation towards the right to get down to the stream and crawl back up to have a look at this beauty. (one could get down from the left too). Not so far away from the steep fall lies the most beautiful fall of this river and we named her Knuckles Paradise fall. One could easily camp at its base because there is a wide rocky slab area. At this point we decided to get a group picture too.

While descending further we came across a stream which originates from Hemachandra Wadiya plain and it joined Maha ganga forming a huge waterfall which we named as Hemachandra waththa ella. From here onwards Maha ganga formed many cascades before meeting Naranaththa oya. Though we reached Naranaththa oya we back tracked along Maha ganga to build up our camp since it was already 6pm.

Dinner was not a problem because Irantha had cooked and brought some rice packets so we only had to prepare some tea. The camp site was a safe location since it was separated from the river bed.

Next day morning at around 6am we were searching for the sun but it wasn’t a pleasant morning. The gloomy skies started to weep and we only could manage to boil a cup of tea and have some bread plus jam as breakfast. If it rained the journey would be tougher and the risk of flash flood was our other main concern. So we took of until we reached the junction where Naranaththa oya and Maha ganga met. Its a lovely location since Maha ganaga divides in to many branches and forms 3/4 waterfalls while uniting with Naranaththa oya which it self forms a mini waterfall at that point.

Though we started trekking along Naranaththa oya it was very slippery and the boulders were increasing in size which was a huge obstacle. There was a 800m stretch where the river ran through a rocky abyss and we had to decide whether to proceed along the stream(with risk of flash flood) or take a detour. We decided to climb towards the forest patch on the right hand side and walk close to the river until we skipped the abyss part. Somehow at one point “Maussa” touched my skin I had to suffer the painful sensation for 24 hours despite taking medication. At the end of the Abyss we reached the river and relaxed a bit at Naran Wala ella. It was a very short Walk from here towards the Duwili ella trail cross over.

After reaching Naranaththa oya cross over I decided to stay back while other went on to visit Infinity pool and Sansun ella. After they returned we headed along the trail to reach the top of 9th fall where few of us descended towards the base of it to have some snaps.

From the top of 9th fall we descended along the Duwili ella trail until Weddahena oya where we refreshed our selves and started marching along the Rambukoluwa trail. We didn’t have much time since it was already 4.30pm so it was almost like a walking race. When we reached Rambukoluwa it was 6.20pm and we found an abandoned house with electricity which was a great relief for us. After cooking some noodles and preparing tea we camped at the warendha of that house until the next sun rise.

  • Trekking from Mandaram Nuwara to Piduruthalagala

Mandaram Nuwara is a beautiful village surrounded by mountains and blessed with water falls. The circle of mountains around the village make it gloomy with mist most of the time called it as Mandaram Nuwara. Mandaram Nuwara is situated at drop of Piduruthalagala range.
History of Mandaram Nuwara goes back to King Rawana era. There is a poetry book called “Mandaram Puwatha” (මන්දාරම් පුවත) mentioning history of this beautiful village. Mandaram Nuwara was known as “Mandarampura” (මන්දාරම්පුර) and this area was used as visiting place as well as hiding place by Kandyan Royal Family. Some of villagers in Mandaram Nuwara origins from Wedda.

The main objective of this journey to trek from Mandaram Nuwara (1250m) to Piduruthalagala (2524m). In good old days there was a foot path from Nuwera Eliya to Mandaram Nuwara via Piduruthalagala but it was banded to public due to Piduruthalagala forest reserve. (Don’t know it is the same foot path we have followed to Piduruthalagala summit).
On our way to Piduruthalagala summit we have planned to visit Kolapathana Ella, Kodiya Ara Gala, Beragahana Ella, Seetha Ella and Hansiya Dowa Ella.
I have been at Manadaram Nuwara for waterfall hunting in 2013 and this is my second visit to sensational village.

The journey started from Pettah central bus stand. I have booked late night (12 mid night) Walapane bus which has arrived at Padiyapelella around 5.00am. The expected bus to Mandaram Nuwara from Padiyapelella was not there on that day. Luckily we met a lorry which goes to Gonamaduwa Dewalaya via Mandaram Nuwara.
Just after getting down from Lorry, we had breakfast from a tea shop at Mandaram Nuwara junction. Then we met our guides (Anura and Raja) at Raja’s place. As it took a time to prepare our packed lunch, we just walk around the village.
One of our targets-Kodiya Ara Gala is seen with misty back ground.

Malsara Nuwara is situated closer to Mandaram Nuwara.

After packing everything for two days we started the journey to Kolapathana Ella. Kolapathana Falls is a frequently visited place of Mandaram Nuwara. There is a clear foot path to Kolapathana Ella along abounded paddies. It is not essential to have a guide to visit at Kolapathana Ella, but better have. Bathing, eating and drinking at Kolapathana Falls is strictly prohibited as all these water is used by people in Mandaram Nuwara. When you look at Kolapathana Falls in distance, you may realize it as a cascade of multi steps. There is a side fall which joins with main fall at it’s base becomes more prominent with rain. The water level of the fall was moderate on the day we visited. Kolapathana Fall is situated at 1500m level and it is a 1km hike from Mandaram Nuwara to Kolapathana Falls.

Kolapathana Falls (කොලපතන ඇල්ල) (7.023878, 80.780801)
The story behind the name of the fall is interesting. One day a royal lady called Malasara (මල්සරා) has visited at this fall and bought her food wrapped an Arica leaf / Kolapath (කොලපත). She has kept this Arica leaf at this fall after eating food. The fall she kept “Kolapatha” became Kolapathana Fall.

After enjoying Kolapathana Falls we were back in same foot pathway in certain distance and got upward turn to our next destination-Kodigala. Now we have deviated from clear foot path to a forest trek. Our guides were interesting in doing rituals for “Kohomba Deviyo”- කොහොඹා දෙවියෝ (Like Ayyanayaka Dewiyo at Rajarata) before start the journey through the forest. This foot path first lies parallel to the water stream and then we crossed the stream of Kolapathana Falls. It was a continuous hike through forest and Nelu bushes till we reach Kodigala. On our way to Kodigala, we have come across another view point where Mandaram Nuwara is clearly visible.

Kodigala (කොඩිගල) is also known as Kodigahana Kanda (කොඩිගහන කන්ද), Kodiyara Gala due to flag point on top of the mountain. This is a nice view point towards Mandaram Nuwara. We experienced extreme windy condition at summit point of Kodigala. Pettigala (පෙට්ටිගල) and Sinha gala (සිoහගල) is situated behind and Kollangolla (කොල්ලන්ගොල්ල) Mountain is seen front of Kodigala. We have planned to spend the night at cave closer to another fall called Hansiya Dowa. On our way to Hansiya Dowa, we came across Seetha Pond (සීතා පොකුණ) which is a small pond where medicinal essence were poured in control manner. When we went upstream we could notice a fairly large pond above the so called Seetha Herbal Pond. There were 2/3 waterfalls in downstream of Seetha Herbal Pond.

Having a water stream closer to the cave is a bonus in camping. Night was extremely cold as we are closer to the highest point of Sri Lanka. Thick forest covering around and water stream made it worse. Our guides had a lot of stories to tell while we were around bone fire. It was a day with visiting a lot of interesting places.

Day 02
Silence of early morning has broken by drizzling. It didn’t rain heavily but continuous drizzling and mist were there. We had early morning breakfast and packed our stuff for the summit day. According to our schedule we would be on top of Piduruthalagala at lunch time. It was a continuous steep hike since beginning of the day till we reached a view point after one hour. Though rain has stopped at that time, mist
has wrapped everything. We hardly watched houses at Mandaram Nuwara from there.

Next stretch of the journey was an ascend through Nelu bushes. After the ascend, we have reached a flat section where Nelu bushes were all over. We were supposed to be at Pathaliya / Lunu Kola Pathana in one hour time but it got delayed to reach there due to mist. Seems guides have missed the foot pathway to Pathaliya.
Pathaliya is a plain covered with grass and bushes called “Hae Lunu” (හැ ළුැණු). Hae Lunu might be a tasty leaves as guides were interesting in cutting them. But we were in chilling cold and finished our last food stuff as final ascend was there. In a clear day towers of Piduruthalagala summit would be popped up above Pathaliya. But we didn’t see anything with mist.

According to guides it is about one hour journey from Pathaliya to towers but they couldn’t find the correct path. As mist was thick they were not able to find the direction of towers. Here we have used Google map to find the direction to towers. I learnt a lesson of using Google map as second option even you are with experienced guide. So last stretch of the journey was done with aid of Google map. After three hours roaming at Piduruthalagala forest reserve we were able to enter the road to towers about 500m before the entrance. All were tired and chilled with cold when we reached the gate.
We have changed all our wet clothes from Army mess and they helped in finding a van to reach Nuwera Eliya. Though the highest point of SL covered with mist we didn’t forget to get photos there. Highest point of Sri Lanka is marked with surveyor’s mark as well as cement statue mentioning attitudes and longitudes. You can watch the highest temple of Sri Lanka on top of Piduruthalagala.
So it ended a long awaited journey from misty Mandaram Nuwara to highest point of Sri Lanka in memorable way.

  • Four minor peaks of Kurunegala-Nathagane, Werapola, Kadiragala and Gonagama Kanda

Kurunegala District is blessed with number of isolated mountains. I have been at highest (Bisogala-823m) and many of them. This is sharing my experience of another four minor peaks at Kurunegala District. They are
1. Nathagane (330m)
2. Werapola (=120m)
3. Gonagama Kanda (=320m)
4. Kadiragala (=130m)

Nathagane (නාථගනේ) (330m) (7.572861, 80.277480)

Route: Colombo->Kurunegala->Mahakeliya in A10 road->Nathagane

Nathagane is an isolated hill situated between Kurunegala and Wariyapola. This is well seen to A10 road (Kurunegala-Anuradhapura road) with stupa on top of the rock.

We have driven along A10 road and got the turn at Kelimune (කෙලිමුනේ) area to Nathagane Buddhist Monastery. There was a concrete road till the car park of the monastery. It is a common feature of all these rocks where a temple or a monastery situated at base of each rocks. It was a brighten day when we started the climb. As it was the meditating time, monks were not around. The welcome from the helper was not Soon we missed the forest path and hiked through dry zone forest. Within about one hour hike we were able to get on to the rock where surrounding view is available.
In this journey we have reached three view points on the rock, including the place with Stupa and highest point of the range. Yakdessagala range and Gonagama Kanda were always rising in front of Nathagane.

Werapola rock is situated closer to Nathagane. Therefore it is better couple this visit with Nathagane hike.

Route: Colombo->Kurunegala->Wariyapola->Kadiragala

God Katharagama (called Kadira-කදිරා) has visited here to meet Walli Amma (වල්ලි අම්මා) (later his wife). Therefore it is called Kadira+Aa+ Gala=Kadiragala
Kadiragala RMW is situated at base of the rock. It says this RMW was built during King Walagamba period. We got permission from the priest and started to follow steps to Kadiragala. It is about 10minutes hike along steps to top of Kadiragala. Though we are supposed to come across stone inscription on side of the steps, but we didn’t see it. On top of Kadiragala, you would see a Buddha statue, small stupa with a pond. Remains of an old stupa is also seen there. Kadiragala is a nice flat rock with 360 degree surrounding view. It includes Nathagane, Werapola, Wellagala, Yakdessagala, Gonagama Kanda and Dolukanda.
