  • Hegasulla/ Agassula Hike 1205m

Heagasulla mountain is  a very beautiful destination but it is more risky than we expected. This is the forest called VRR Forest Reserve (Victoria-Randenigala-Rantambe). We had our first visit to VRR Reserve for the Galpadihela and Kosgolla mountain hike on October 2017. Before that we reached to the Golumale which is at the border of VRR Forest reserve.

However Madusanka has noted this mountain and the rest of the range toward Randenigala and we didn’t have a free time to get prepare to this hike as we didn’t find a proper contact from Theripaha. But soon after we got a contact and we thought to conquer this highest summit of VRR reserve in 2018. We came to Theripaha early in the morning and got some details from the villagers. They are very kind and innocent and helped us to enter from the nearest electric fence of the forest. I have noticed one thing on this little village that is that there are so many boutiques in this small village. Around 20 boutiques located with in this small area and villagers are also visiting all of them. Soon after I got to know that the village is cultivating their own items and this is their tradition from a long time and their business too.

So, we came to the electric fence where a small office also located and start our journey by passing the fence safely. Victoria Randenigala Rantambe Sanctuary is situated between the knuckles mountain range and the central mountains of Kandy. The size of this Sanctuary is 42,087 hectares .This Sanctuary was artificially created by people to protect Victoria reservoir, Randenigala reservoir and Rantambe Sanctuary which are three main hydro-electric reservoir of Sri lanka you can access this sanctuary via world famous hairpin bends or Raja mawatha . You can see herd of elephants in Victoria Randenigala Rantambe Sanctuary.

Some cultivations

This is how we start our journey

After we passing the electric elephant fence we walked as per the GPS map by my app. We have choose the easiest path since we need to be safe. We walked about 2-3km in the forest and then came to the beginning point of the mountain edge. Then we dont need to use GPS because the summit is seen far away and we just want to walk along the edge safely. We have seen many elephant dung during this part hence we kept our eyes on the left side of the lower forest area too.

Remeber to have enough water as the entire journey is fully open to the sky and you will feel thirsty at many places. Since we are walking by jump over the rocks it will be more tired but enjoyable.

Sky is clear and the path is also clear

Came to the summit, the other mountains are Randenigala

Tanks every where of the Eastern side

Elephant dungs at the top of the Hegasulla

We came to the summit after 3-4 hr hike and rested for few minutes. We noticed elephant dungs and foot print every where and realized that this is a simply hike for them. When we came to the summit of Hegasulla mountain, we saw 360 degree view. Narangala, Kukulagala, Piduruthalagala, Mahakudugala area and the Knuckles forest reserve and the many mountains situated in the eastern side.

This are is bit dry and fallen into the middle of wet and dry zone of Sri Lanka. Hence the environment is too good for all kind of animals. That is why we have seen many animals also searching for the big one. After we spend time we headed our journey to Randenigala Mountain. But the Hegasulla trip report will finished here as this could be a adventurable one day journey for the travelers.
